Elegant Meets Whimsical: A Long Island Wedding

Hey ya’ll! 2018 was a big year for my family. My big sister, Michelle got married to the best man I know (Hi Tommy!). I had sat down with Michelle to talk about her day, but also all that she learned from the wedding planning experience, the vendors she chose, and to also give helpful tips to any girl who is currently planning a wedding.
As the maid of honor, there is a lot of events that led up to wedding day: the engagement party, the bachelorette party, the bridal shower, the speeches and all the little maid of honor duties in between.
Would anyone be interested in a guide from the maid of honor perspective of all the planning and resources I used?
Let me know in the comments below. As well as if you like this interview style post. I would love to do more posts with local female entrepreneurs/business owners/influencers to share their stories/challenges/successes. If you know any local woman who have inspired you please nominate them.
Okay, let’s get into it.

Hi Sis! Let’s start off with Tom, how long have you been together? 7 1/2 years. You introduced us. We met a couple of times before, but then we went to Fire Island in the summer of 2011. He was just so cute and funny. It was instant. We kept walking down to the beach and he kept spinning me. We were drinking out of his backpack because we couldn’t afford drinks. We were all dancing like crazy at the Sand Bar and no one wanted to go home when the last ferry came. We all wound up sleeping on the beach and freezing our butts off.

It was absolutely freezing. I love that picture of us on beach chairs. 7 years later, how did he propose?
He started a scavenger hunt for me. He said he was going to a “work event” out east. He said he had to go ahead of time to set up and I had to meet him. By the time I got out of the shower, he had left and there was a note starting a scavenger hunt which doesn’t seem so weird because he does leave notes or give cards pretty regularly. The first one was in the kitchen, then one by the door, then the car, then he led me to Montauk. It was raining and there was flash flood warnings! The first stop was Hither Hills where we go camping, then to John Pancakes House where we always get breakfast while were out there. Then Montauket where we watch the sunset and then finally to the gazebo in the center of town where he got down on one knee.  When you put all of the cards together, they spelt out ” Marry me?”

And the Ring! Oh my gosh, your ring.
[laughs] I was dropping hints. He knew I wanted Lauren B.

LET’S GET INTO THE DAY OF…

Your wedding shoes…
Uhhh, the shoes! Tom had asked me how to use my Cricut. He had told me he wanted to put something on the bottom of the shoe. He kept asking how to use it, so I gave him a quick tutorial. Not really thinking too much about it.  As I was waiting to walk down the aisle I said “oh! Tom said he put something on the bottom of my shoes!” I sat down and literally almost pulled a muscle trying to bend in that direction. [laughs] On the bottom of my shoe was a note from my grandfather. He had taken his signature from one of my birthday cards. I was very close with him and he is no longer with us.  Everyone instantly started crying, everyone. It was blue for my something blue.
It meant so much to me that he even took the time to learn to do that to do this for me. And to have my grandfather there with me. I was very upset that this big day would come and he wouldn’t be apart of it. Tom made it so that he was. He got to be with me as I walked down the aisle. I had a picture in a locket of my grandparents on my bouquet. I knew they were there.

What was your favorite part of the day?
My favorite part of the wedding was that you coordinated a flashmob. Right after the maid of honor speech, a song started playing and it was a song that Papa [our grandfather] loved to sing. He was super silly and fun and he would always sing that song. I remember even near the end when he was in the hospital, he was still singing that song. So as soon as the music started playing, I was like “what is happening!” It was a flash mob of the bridesmaids and groomsman to “Banana Boat”. It was so unexpected and so funny, but also meant so much. Because again, I felt like he was there.

Were there other really sweet moments for you?
Oh gosh, a ton! When the reverend asked who gives this woman away and dad stood up and put his hand on his heart. His sincerity and emotion was the sweetest. He loves Tom, so I know it was a moment he truly honored.

You guys had decided to write your own vows. What was going on through your mind when you heard Tom’s?
I was like “oh my god, I only wrote one page” [laughs] Mine were really short. They were really sweet and heartfelt. When his voice started cracking I started to cry. It was a very emotional day.

LET’S TALK VENDORS..

Your hairstylist was incredible.
A friend of mind recommended Ashley Glazer and then I went on her instagram and she had a really good boho vibe: really natural, not too formal. She’s from Hair Stories in Babylon. She was amazing and she has the best personality. Actually, picking my hair style was a morning of decision. She just made whatever I asked for happen! I knew that I wanted my hair down in some way, but wasn’t sure how. I just knew I did NOT want my hair up, I look like Martha Washington. [laughs] She may be a little bit pricier, but your hair and make up is so important. You’re spending thousands of dollars on one day, you want to look your best. She is worth every cent. I promise. I mean look at my bridesmaids!

Yes and your make up was flawless.
Kristin Mavroson! She did one of best friend’s Amanda’s wedding. I actually didn’t get my make up done for her wedding but after I saw the other girls I regretted it. I loved how natural she made all of the girls look. All the other make up artists I tried, I always felt like I looked like a different person. With Kristin, she really made me feel like the best version of myself.  After I had my trial, I came home and Tom looked at me and said ”wow” and I booked her immediately. It was really important to me that Tom liked my make up as well.

Who was your florist?
Sugar Magnolia. I just love her style. She felt like me. She was a little bit more pricey than other places that we looked at. But I just felt like her flowers were exactly what I dreamed of when I thought of our wedding day; a lot of greenery with muted tones. My biggest advice would be to follow a few places on Instagram and kind of see which place best matches your vision and who you trust most. That was important to me, I trusted her. I knew I didn’t have to stress at all because she understood our vision.

Your invitations were regal. They were so stunning, I was screaming

Joy Theory! Danni [our sister in law] did my invitations. She was phenomenal. I sent her a Pinterest board of all the invitations I liked. I just trusted her and said do what you feel. She sent me a million surveys to really hone in what I wanted and she nailed it. They were printed on handmade paper and letter-pressed. She hand sketched a picture of the Bourne mansion onto the envelope liner. It gave it the most beautiful and personal touch. It meant so much that a family member had made that for us. They are currently framed in our living room.

I was screaming when I came over and opened the Box. The branding, the presentation, the quality. Truly stunning.
I know. She really is the most talented person we know. The process was so professional and simple.

If you had to describe your wedding to someone who couldn’t see it in pictures, how would you describe it? Elegant meets whimsical. Our color scheme was blush and natural tones with a lot of greenery and copper accents. Very romantic and ethereal.
It’s funny because originally I wanted to get married in a barn and wanted a rustic vibe. Then my co-teacher had mentioned the Bourne Mansion and we both just fell in love, which was so surprising because it was totally opposite of what we thought we wanted. But I loved the high ceilings, crown molding, the antique look of it.

Your photographers were like ninjas. You didn’t even see them, they were just there.
Jay Lim Studios. LOVED them. Can’t say enough. I had given them a list of all the photos I wanted before hand. They had the list with them and were very meticulous about getting every single thing I asked for and getting it done quickly. Like the sparkler pictures, I really wanted that shot. They quickly rounded up the whole bridal party and took us all outside. For some reason, we sang the National Anthem [laughs] and were done. There was no stress, they got the shot and we could keep dancing. I chose them because my cousin used them for her wedding and they were great. They were reasonable, I feel like. Maybe somewhat reasonable [laughs].
Tom: I had missed the last day of the night because I was praising them. [laughs]

Music was the top of your priority list.
We wanted the quartet to have the romantic feel for the ceremony. We went with a DJ which we weren’t sure about and we were so happy we did. Our DJ was so, so fun. Having the drummer as well made such a different.  It worked out perfectly.
And they were so easy to work with for my flash mob.

WEDDING INSPIRATION

What was your go-to for wedding  inspiration?
Pinterest and then following so many bride accounts and saving posts that stood out to me and matched our wedding style and keeping my pins consistent and cohesive

Will you share your Pinterest board with us?

THE DRESS

Your wedding dress was the most beautiful dress I had ever seen. You were a real life princess. Who was the designer?
Hayley Paige! On Pinterest and Instagram, every picture of a dress that I liked happened to be Hayley Paige. I felt like “wow, this designer gets me.” She has that whimsical, romantic look to her dresses I was looking for. When we originally went to a trunk show with mom, just to look at all the dresses, I had one specific dress in mind, the Decklyn. When we got there, I just fell in love with the Fleur de Lis.

My bridesmaids dresses were Hayley Paige as well. I let everyone choose their own because everyone has their own style and body type. They were spending a lot on these dresses so I wanted it to be something they could keep, possibly re-wear, or at least enjoy being in. As far as color, I loved the dusty rose, it wasn’t your standard pink. It was more of a romantic blush color that could work with every season.

And it all blended together so beautifully. How did you ask the girls to be your bridesmaids?
At my engagement party. I gave them each a wood box with their name on it. It had cute little things inside likes stress relief tea, a mini wine, bath bombs, etc. and a card that said ‘Will you be my bridesmaids?” But, I think that today theres so much pressure to be doing these cute little things that if you were to just have your friends over, pop some champagne, and ask them it would be just as fun and a lot less stressful. There’s so many good things about Pinterest, but also some bad. You think you have to do all of these things, but the day of, it all flies by so fast and then it’s gone and all of those things didn’t matter.

THE DETAILS

Looking back, what was the most important things to dedicate your time to?
I think it’s all relative to who you are as a person. At the end of the day, if you have good music, good food, and good friends, you’re going to have the best time and it will all come together. But I am someone who does pay attention to the details, so all of it [laughs].

But there are so many tiny details. What are some things you put a lot of time and effort into that now looking back maybe you didn’t need to? I didn’t see any of it the day of. I put all this effort into the details, and I didn’t see any of it. Hopefully someone appreciated my labor. [laughs] I spent a lot of money on the guest book and maybe 7 people signed it. I’m not even sure what to do with it.

Of the details, things you should focus most of your time on.
Table numbers, seating chart, flowers, the memory table were all really important to us. But make sure you don’t go crazy spending. Most of it, I made myself. I had a trunk of pashminas and a sign that said “to have and to hold, in case you get cold” which I loved. If you’re having an outdoor wedding, a lot of people told me that they was something they really appreciated. And flip flops! Get to Old Navy for dollar flip flop day.

THE CEREMONY

The sun was starting to set just as you guys said your vows and the string quartet was playing. The decor was so simple, but powerful.
We had lanterns down the aisle, flowers every other row, the string quartet, and the flower urns next to us and it was everything we dreamed of.
You guys chose to do a reveal before the ceremony, are you still happy with that choice?
Yes, definitely. I think that for logistic reasons, it’s best for the guests. They like being able to go from the ceremony to the reception. I know it’s not about the guests, it’s your day. However, I liked that I got my hair and make up done and it was fresh. We went right into taking pictures and kind of had that done with. We got our pictures done and from there on out, we could just enjoy.
What were the things that were most important to Tom?
Everything. Oh my gosh, he was more caring about things than me. Writing our own vows was something that was very important to him and he did a lot better than me. (laughs) He wanted the string quartet, he was very set on that. He picked out all the music. He set up the afterparty. He made all the phone calls about the logistics. He had a lot of opinions. I had to run everything by him.

THE MINDSET

You were super, super relaxed the night before and the morning of your wedding. It was actually me who was having a panic attack.
Yeah (laughs) I had to calm you down.

There’s so much pressure for everything to be perfect. What’s the secret of remaining calm?
I was very happy! I also got acupuncture 3 days in a row at Long Island Holistic. Go get acupuncture the days before! You spent the whole year planning for this one day, it would be a shame to not enjoy it.
You were always very sure about Tom. How do you know when someone’s the right one?
 When you have no doubts.
Do you have any advice for having a successful relationship?
It’s just pure luck. [laughs] Find someone who brings out the best in you and makes you feel the best about yourself
Tom: Do everything she says

What’s next for the O’Briens?
Ireland! [We are all heading there next month]

TIPS

Were there tools that helped you plan and organize your wedding?
Pinterest! Using key words that describe your style to fine tune what you’re looking for. Instead of table numbers, search “copper table numbers.” Or if your theme is more barn-like, search “rustic table numbers.” I used the Wedding Wire app and Zola for contacts because I liked how on Zola you could put in the addresses and upload it to any format for invitations. I used Minted for our Save the Dates and Engagement Party Invitations

Do you have any budgeting tips?
Eat PB&J sandwiches everyday [laughs]. Figure out your budget, your bills, how much you can realistically save a month then figure out how long of an engagement you need based off of that. We gave ourselves a budget for every single vendor. I used a cheat sheet online that tells you how much is typical to spend on each vendor and then I tried to come in under-budget.

Do you have any advice for someone who just got engaged and is beginning to plan a wedding? Be ahead of the checklist.  Know your style. I’ve had friends who have zero idea of what they want or like and they had a really hard time. Because for me, I knew I wanted greenery in my flowers. I had a solid idea of what our wedding would be like so it was easy for me to make decisions.
The other thing I will say is have him do a lot because screw that! I remember when he went for the music and the DJ was like “this has never happened before, I’ve never spoken to the groom before.” He had said “it’s alway the bride calling” and I was like, why? He knows how to listen to music. He can pick songs. If I had things to cut out, he was cutting them out. Give him things to do, it doesn’t have to be all you.
Also, don’t stress or put too much thought on the little details. It’s easy to say that, but the day flies by and you won’t care.
